Flávio Bolsonaro lands in Miami after fleeing Brazil post-election loss
Defeated Brazilian presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro landed in Miami on Wednesday after fleeing his home country following Sunday's runoff election loss to incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.[7, 28, 46] A senior State Department official told ABC News and CBS News that the U.S. would issue visas to Bolsonaro, a Brazilian senator, and his family.[16, 19] He traveled from Brazil through Argentina and Ecuador before arriving at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport, according to reports piecing together his route.[25, 32, 52]
Brazilian authorities had ordered him to surrender his passport amid multiple criminal investigations, including alleged corruption, money laundering and tax evasion, and he left the country anyway.[5, 12, 21 +1] President Donald Trump said he approved of Bolsonaro coming to the U.S., telling reporters the election was "very strange" and that Bolsonaro and his family were "fine people."[22, 29]
The Washington Examiner reported that hours after landing, Bolsonaro declared himself the "true elected president of Brazil."[47] The Intercept reported that Brazil's Supreme Court had tried to strip Bolsonaro's passport before the Trump administration granted him a visa.[8]
Why it matters The U.S. decision to shelter Bolsonaro poses a fresh irritant to relations between the two countries' governments.[17]
