Ernie Johnson to leave Inside the NBA after this season
Ernie Johnson announced on social media Wednesday that this season will be his last as host of Inside the NBA, ending a 37-season run.[1, 3, 7 +1] Johnson, who joined the show in 1990, said "it's just time" and cited heart issues as a contributing factor.[7, 17, 19] He said he wants to spend more time with family after recent health challenges, but says he is not retiring and will continue other broadcasting projects.[9]
The show's panel has included Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and Shaquille O'Neal.[9] Charles Barkley became emotional during Wednesday's ESPN broadcast, saying, "All I can say, Ernie, is thank you. Thank you for being our leader."[18] Draymond Green also responded to the announcement.[5]
Why it matters Johnson says he will continue other broadcasting projects while spending more time with family, and attention now turns to the rest of the show's panel.[9, 10]
