France deploys 70,000 police as protests enter third weekend
France deployed about 70,000 police officers ahead of a third weekend of youth-led protests over rising living costs and the education system, with roughly 150 demonstrations planned.[2, 11] Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez warned earlier this week of a "very high risk" of public disorder, especially after dark on Halloween.[2, 14] The French government estimated that 320,000 people protested nationwide Saturday in demonstrations focused on high living costs.[22]
That was fewer than the more than 500,000 at Oct. 17 protests and the 410,000 at Oct. 24 demonstrations by government estimates; organizers' turnout estimates are much higher.[22] Police said about 70,000 people demonstrated in Paris alone.[7]
Police and protesters clashed in Paris and other cities.[4, 7] The protests also spread to Germany on Halloween Saturday.[10]
Why it matters Fox News reported the unrest has come amid more than $1 billion in losses.[12]
