US economy grew at 3.4% annualized rate in third quarter
The US economy grew at a 3.4% annualized rate in the third quarter, faster than expected, according to preliminary Bureau of Economic Analysis data released Thursday.[2, 5] Bloomberg reported it was the fastest pace in a year.[3] Consumer spending stayed resilient and business investment rose sharply, reflecting an AI boom, with companies pouring money into data centers and technology.[3, 4, 6 +1]
The Guardian and the New York Post reported the strong growth stood in contrast to households' downbeat assessment of the economy.[1, 7] The Guardian noted the report came out just ahead of elections and that growth more than offset the impact of higher oil prices stemming from the conflict in the Middle East.[1] NewsNation said the economy has proven resilient in the face of higher energy prices caused by the fighting with Iran.[12]
