Amazon misses estimates as AWS revenue grows 39% to $46 billion

Amazon reported third-quarter results that missed Wall Street's total revenue and earnings per share estimates, while its cloud business grew faster than expected.[2, 5] Amazon Web Services revenue grew 39% to $46 billion, its fastest pace in nearly five years, according to GeekWire and The Information.[7, 8] The Information reported that growth accelerated from a 37% rate in the second quarter, while Amazon's other segments, which depend on its ecommerce business, slowed.[8]

CNBC reported that the cloud unit signed deals with Meta and OpenAI during the quarter, helping AWS revenue exceed consensus.[4] Bloomberg reported that Amazon spent more than $77 billion on property and equipment in the quarter, far more than analysts' estimates, as it builds data centers for AI demand.[3]

CEO Andy Jassy said he expects AWS to top 40% growth in 2027 and 2028, according to GeekWire.[7] Amazon gave a cautious sales forecast for the fourth quarter, which encompasses the holiday shopping period, according to ABC News and The Guardian.[1, 2]
