Criminal probe underway in Alaska Senate race over second Dan Sullivan
Federal prosecutors confirmed a criminal investigation into an alleged scheme to put a second candidate named Dan Sullivan on Alaska's Senate ballot to confuse voters.[1, 26, 52] U.S. Attorney for the District of Alaska Michael Heyman announced the probe at a press conference on Friday, and NBC News reported the FBI is surging agents to Alaska as part of it.[21, 26] Democratic Senate candidate Mary Peltola denied knowing anything about the effort, telling supporters she "knew nothing" about decoy candidates recruited to run.[11, 13]
The Justice Department is seeking to preserve ballots cast in the race and says it is not seeking to change votes or declare a winner, according to the Washington Examiner.[54] The DOJ also filed proposed questions to compel the Peltola campaign and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee to answer about their reported role in recruiting Dan J. Sullivan.[23] President Donald Trump called for Peltola to be prosecuted, calling the allegations "voter fraud at the highest level," and renewed the call while stumping in Florida.[3, 53]
Alaska's Republican governor, Mike Dunleavy, declined to commit to certifying the outcome of the Senate race if Peltola wins, The New Republic reported.[12] Sen. Johnson launched a probe into the matter, and the second Dan Sullivan reportedly left his hometown of Petersburg days before the election.[34, 37]
