Polish president returns from Senegal after top court chief suspended
Polish President Karol Nawrocki cut short a trip to Senegal and returned to Poland after the government suspended Constitutional Tribunal President Bogdan Swieczkowski and installed an interim head of the court.[10, 11, 15] Nawrocki announced on X that he was returning, saying the president must be in Poland at a moment like this.[10] Riot police surrounded the Constitutional Tribunal in Warsaw on Friday as dozens of protesters gathered against the suspension.[12, 13]
Police said demonstrators threw objects at officers and three people were arrested after trying to enter the court complex.[12] The Washington Examiner reported Nawrocki forced his way into the high court overnight Saturday as his supporters clashed with police outside.[15]
Nawrocki and his allies called the suspension a coup, while the Financial Times described a bitter dispute between the president and Prime Minister Donald Tusk over appointments to the constitutional court.[8, 9, 18] The Washington Times said protesters viewed the suspension of the court's president by the pro-European government as wrongful.[13]
