Alonso stands by criticism of F1 driving standards after Albon clash
Fernando Alonso doubled down on his criticism of driving standards in Formula 1 after being hit by Alexander Albon on the opening lap of the US Grand Prix in Austin.[1, 4] Aston Martin's chief trackside officer Mike Krack said the contact cost Alonso a considerable amount of downforce, and Motorsport.com reported Alonso's car suffered permanent floor damage.[1, 5] Alonso said the quality of drivers in the lower third of the field is very low and questioned why teams put up with drivers crashing so much in the cost cap era.[3, 7]
He added that when starting at the back there is always this risk, and said those targeted know who they are.[1] Albon responded that F1 has no more pay drivers, dismissed claims that the bottom third of the grid lacks quality, and said Alonso's criticism was not nice to hear.[5]
